On Friday, the union cast its ballot and chose the guy who ran through Middle-earth, yelled, “I got this!” in Rudy, and keeps popping up in Stranger Things. He is taking over the role from Fran Drescher. Sean is a second-generation star; his mom was the late, brilliant Patty Duke, and his dad is John Astin, everyone’s favorite Gomez Addams.

Astin won the race convincingly, scoring 79% of the votes against Chuck Slavin, who got 21%. Michelle Hurd—whose credits also light up Stranger Things—was named secretary-treasurer.

Astin’s mother also served the union: Patty Duke was SAG’s boss in the late ’80s.

Who Is Sean Astin, and Why Did He Win the SAG-AFTRA Presidency?

Sean Astin became SAG-AFTRA’s new president after winning the election with nearly 80% of the vote. He is best recognized for playing Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings, and he has also appeared in Rudy and the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Sean is the son of award-winning actress Patty Duke and actor John Astin, famous for his role in The Addams Family TV show.

What Is SAG-AFTRA, and What Is Its Role?

SAG-AFTRA is the union for people who work in TV, film, and radio. That means it includes actors, announcers, journalists, and singers. Formed from the merger of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, it now has about 160,000 members. The union fights for better pay, working conditions, and healthcare for performers, negotiating contracts that help members throughout the entertainment and media industries.

How Did the Election for SAG-AFTRA’s President Turn Out?

Sean Astin won the presidency with 79% of the vote, easily defeating Chuck Slavin. Michelle Hurd, who also campaigned for the leadership, is now the secretary-treasurer of the union.

How does Sean Astin link to SAG-AFTRA history?

Sean Astin’s ties to SAG-AFTRA go way back. He’s the son of the late Patty Duke, who held the president’s seat at SAG from 1985 to 1988. Duke faced tough choices, shaped industry standards, and then handed the torch to the next generation. That mighty legacy now lights up Sean’s fresh start as president, showing the family tie runs deeper than the credit list.

What tough calls landed on Fran Drescher’s desk before she stepped down?

Fran Drescher guided SAG-AFTRA through a storm. While she sat in the president’s chair, the union faced walking papers on multiple Hollywood picket lines, from studio film to streaming series, plus voice-over work in video games and interactive media. Members pressed for fair pay and work rules in a quickly shifting industry. Fran steered the boat, rallying the ranks and keeping eyes on the long game.
