James Gunn Confirms Early Digital Release for ‘Superman’.
James Gunn shared with ScreenRant that “Superman” will be available early for digital purchase on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and other platforms. This gives fans a chance to catch up on the summer blockbuster just before “Peacemaker” Season 2 drops on HBO Max, August 21.
“Superman” kicked off Gunn’s new DC Universe, and “Peacemaker” is the next chapter. In multiple interviews, Gunn has confirmed that the timeline of Season 2 is set shortly after the events of the film. Characters like Hawkgirl, played by Isabela Merced, and Guy Gardner, portrayed by Nathan Fillion, will make their live-action debuts in the movie and then appear in new storylines in Season 2.

“Superman” hits PVOD platforms on Friday, Aug. 15, just a month after its July 11 theater debut from Warner Bros. and DC Studios. The quick digital release has left some comic book fans frustrated. They feel the timing is unfair, especially since the film is still racking up big numbers, with a $334 million domestic haul and almost $600 million worldwide. The movie’s weekend box office hold has been steady, including a strong $7 million take in its fifth weekend.
When ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley tweeted his disappointment at the early digital move, director James Gunn chimed in, saying, “Me too,” before spelling out the complicated reasons. He noted that while a long theatrical run is ideal, early digital access can help reach fans who are eager to watch the film as soon as possible, especially in today’s on-demand culture.
“It’s a little complicated, but it comes down to ‘Peacemaker,’” Gunn explained. “I assumed ‘Peacemaker’ would drop next month. A bunch of stuff we couldn’t control pushed it to a later date, and I decided I wanted as many people as possible to see ‘Superman’—especially those who couldn’t make it to a theater before ‘Peacemaker’ stepped in. So that’s why we reshuffled things.”
